Why India, why now
India imports roughly US$2.3 billion — about 33 million m³ — of forest products a year, growing more than 7 % annually on infrastructure investment, and industry representatives report specifically unmet demand for softwoods — pine and eucalyptus — used largely in pallet manufacturing (FAIMA, via Argentina Forestal). That demand is already moving cargo from the Río de la Plata: in August 2026, 20,000 tons of pine and eucalyptus logs were loaded at the port of Concepción del Uruguay, Argentina, bound for Kandla (Argentina Forestal). Where the timber lands
About 65 % of India's timber imports — roughly 3.5 million m³ a year — clear through Kandla, with Gandhidham, 12 km away, as the sawmilling and plywood hub that processes most of that volume (Indian Forester). Documentation for India
Raw timber and logs clear Indian customs under the Plant Quarantine (Regulation of Import into India) Order, 2003 — methyl bromide fumigation at 48 g/m³ for 24 hours at 21 °C or above, endorsed on the phytosanitary certificate issued at origin — not under ISPM-15, which covers wood packaging only.
